National Minimum Wage Rates 2024 (UK)

From 1st April 2024 the national living wage (NLW) and national minimum wage rates (NMW) will all increase.

For the first time the main rate will apply to 21 and 22 year olds – previously it applied to those aged 23 and over.

The new rates are now as follows:

  • For those aged 21 & over – NLW rises to £11.44 per hour (Note this used to apply to only those aged 23 and over)
  • For those aged 18-20 – the NMW will be £8.60 (an increase of £1.11)
  • For 16 & 17 and apprentices – £6.40 per hour (an increase of £1.12)

The ‘accommodation offset’ (the maximum amount an employer who pays minimum wage and who provides live-in accommodation to staff is allowed to deduct from daily pay) will increase by 89p  to £9.99 per day.

The accommodation offset, the amount by which the average pay may be lowered below the applicable minimum wage, applies only to accommodation. An offset is not allowed for the cost of utilities, council tax, uniforms, tools or anything else.
