Outsourcing for SME employers – the basics

Outsourcing payroll and HR makes perfect sense for any SME business

We too often see SMEs, sometimes with fewer than 100 staff, employing internal HR & payroll staff. JCHR’s Catherine Larke insists this is a missed opportunity:

“It’s not unusual to find large organisations providing support for thousands of people with just a small HR and payroll team. My husband and co-founder Bill looked after HR for Coca-Cola’s 2000-odd operational staff, with a team of just 4 people. The HR & payroll needs of most SMEs rarely justify the cost of internal headcount. A good quality outsource service should provide support for all the key areas – payroll, HR admin & processes, basic engagement surveys, case management & good quality compliance – well written contracts and policies for example.

HR responsibility should really sit with people managers, not an HR department. A decent HR outsourcer should be able to train & support managers in their responsibilities.

Through a formal partnership the two companies operate as JCHR.)

Between payroll and HR, JCHR invest hundreds of thousands in staff and in the latest technology so that SME customers can focus on running their organisations. Nick Butler, responsible for the payroll team, adds:

“Payroll & HR logically sit together. By outsourcing these key functions to JCHR, clients can save headcount and cost, and not worry about internal staff skills becoming outdated, or causing a problem when they leave. There are many services on the market that claim to offer payroll and HR, but rarely do these come with the personal and comprehensive services we pride ourselves on here.”
